Broadbent’s form has been consistent throughout the first half of the season, with the hard-bodied midfielder now a vital cog in the Eagles’ midfield rotation. His chasing, tackling and competitiveness may see him earn an AFL debut against a mature Cats’ outfit on Sunday.
The award is judged by Power development coaches, Darren Trevena and Stuart Cochrane, and is announced exclusively at PortAdelaideFC.com.au each week.
Jackson Trengove made his long awaited league debut, impressing against the Redlegs, Mitch Farmer played his first game for his new club and Glenn Dawson pinch hit in the ruck for the Eagles reserves. The full wrap is below.
Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week
Matthew Broadbent (for Eagles v South @ Noarlunga) – Another typical Broady game, chasing hard, tackling and winning his own ball in the Eagles midfield, playing against a quality opponent in Jason Torney. He took the honours in the contest against Torney and picked up 19 possessions and a goal himself. His form has been solid over the first three months of the season and he’s worked hard on certain areas of his game. He could add a real toughness, desperation and competitiveness at AFL level if he was called upon.
Mitch Banner (for Eagles v South @ Noarlunga) – Mitch probably didn’t get the same chances in the midfield that he has had in his first few league games, but still managed to use the ball well and push forward to kick a goal. He just needs to work a bit harder to win his own ball.
Paul Stewart (for Eagles v South @ Noarlunga) – A solid game from Stewie playing all over the place, gathering 8 kicks, 3 marks and 10 handballs. He was just below his best, and despite the fact he worked hard, he needs to step his game up to the next level to put his hand up for AFL selection.
Nathan Krakouer (for Port v Norwood @ Alberton) – Krak looked very dangerous up forward and probably had the opportunity to kick eight goals had he taken all his chances, but in the end, he gave a few off and a few shots dropped short. He finished with 2.2, 18 possessions and 8 marks.
Jackson Trengove (for Port v Norwood @ Alberton) – Jacko played his first league game for the year, having returned from a long term injury several weeks ago through the reserves. He played on Sam Rowe keeping him to just one goal. He also had 9 spoils and was very aggressive at the contest. It was a promising performance and Jackson is right on track with his progress this year and we’re looking forward to a few more good league games for the rest of the season.
Nick Lower (for Norwood v Port @ Alberton) – Lower didn’t have quite the same impact as he has had in previous weeks, but still did some good tough work in defence, finishing with 9 kicks and 12 handballs. Still chased and tackled hard and won some clearances when he was in the midfield.
Jonathon Giles (for Central v North @ Elizabeth) – A solid game from Gilesy, working hard in the ruck against a quality opponent in Cain Ackland. Won 15 out of 24 ruck contests on the day and regularly gave his midfield first use of the ball with good hitouts to advantage. Looked good up forward as well, kicking a lead up goal despite limited time on ground.
Glenn Dawson (for Eagles reserves v South reserves @ Noarlunga) – The Cougar played everywhere for the Eagles, even pinch hitting in the ruck after both ruckmen went down. He actually won 9 out of 22 hitouts when he was in the ruck, with his great vertical leap proving to be a surprising asset. He also spent time on the half back line and towards the end of the game, forward. Despite limited opportunities as the third string forward, he still managed to kick two goals.
Nick Salter (for Eagles reserves v South reserves @ Noarlunga) – A classy performance at half forward for Salts, finishing with 14 kicks, 7 handballs, 8 marks and 3.1. He took some good contested marks and looked to be doing it easy at times. He should be pushing for league selection in the next week or two.
Jarrad Redden (for Eagles reserves v South reserves @ Noarlunga) – Only played the first quarter because he copped a knock to his head/neck and didn’t play any further part in the game. He sustained the injury going in for a ground ball (which he won), but he should be right to play this week. Had 5 touches and 9 hitouts in an impressive first quarter.
Mitch Farmer (for South reserves v Eagles reserves @ Noarlunga) – Mitch moved from Sturt to South to give himself a better opportunity to play league football and develop as a player. He played his first game for the Panthers on the weekend and impressed with 18 kicks, 6 handballs, 9 marks and 1.3 playing in the midfield and half forward. He showed some good intensity at the contest and could have topped his game off had he kicked a bit straighter.
Daniel Stewart (for North reserves v Central reserves @ Elizabeth) – On a wet and windy day at Elizabeth Stewie showed he can play in all conditions, impressing in the ruck. Also played forward and took some good lead up and contested marks. Finished with 12 possessions, one goal and some good hitouts to advantage.
Wade Thompson (for North reserves v Central reserves @ Elizabeth) – A quiet day for Wade sustaining a minor shoulder injury. His defensive pressure was good but he needs to get a bit more of the ball and use his speed inside the forward 50 more. He should be right to play this week.
