Lower, who has played just one AFL game this year (against the Saints), will again be pushing for selection after he racked up 33 possessions in a losing Norwood side. The development coaches were impressed with his defensive pressure and ball use.
The award is judged by Power development coaches, Darren Trevena and Stuart Cochrane, and is announced exclusively at PortAdelaideFC.com.au each week.
With injuries in the Power side, several players staked their claim for an AFL call-up during Round 9 SANFL action. The full wrap is below.
Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week
Nick Lower (for Norwood v Sturt @ the Parade) – Another very good game from Nick, a standard we’ve now come to expect from him at SANFL level. He had 14 kicks, 19 handballs and 8 marks, using the ball very well throughout the game. He chased, tackled and applied great defensive pressure, but in the end it wasn’t enough for Norwood to get across the line. He keeps working on his clearance work and he’ll again be putting pressure on for an AFL game.
Jonathon Giles (for Central v Eagles @ Woodville) – Joffa was quieter than he has been but that was partly due to limited time on ground. He was dominant in the ruck when he was on the ground with 11 hitouts but just needs to get a bit more of the ball around the ground.
Paul Stewart (for Eagles v Central @ Woodville) – A good game from Stewie with 16 touches and 8 marks, providing plenty of rebound from defence and keeping his opponent quiet. Used the ball well and he was one of the reasons behind the win.
Matthew Broadbent (for Eagles v Central @ Woodville) – Another impressive display from Broady, racking up 23 possessions and 6 clearances playing on the ball and the half back line. He kicked a good goal to put the Eagles ahead in the final quarter and was good against some good opposition. He’s getting closer to senior selection each week.
Mitch Banner (for Eagles v Central @ Woodville) – Mitch made his league debut in a great win for the Eagles. He played on a half forward flank and had 13 possessions and kicked a great long goal from outside 50, probably goal of the day. He tackled and pressured well at stoppages and looked very composed at league level. An impressive debut.
Daniel Stewart (for North v South @ Noarlunga) – Stewie played up forward and in the ruck and had a quieter day, stuggling for opportunities in a packed North Adelaide forward line with names including Gill, Alleway, Schwarze and White. Had 10 possessions and again looked mobile around the ground. Will be looking to improve on that performance in the coming weeks.
Jesse Laurie (for West v Port @ Alberton) – Jesse played his first league game for West on the weekend, after getting the call-up on Friday night. He played down back and provided some good run while keeping his man quiet. Finished with 10 kicks, 3 marks and 5 handballs in a solid first up game.
Jason Davenport (for West v Port @ Alberton) – A really good first half but didn’t have as much influence in the second half. Still got a lot of the ball with 21 touches and 11 marks and again got forward to kick 2.2. He always works hard and although his kicking wasn’t as good as it has been on the weekend, we’re still happy with how he’s developing that part of his game.
Glenn Dawson (for Eagles reserves v Central reserves @ Woodville) – A quieter game for the Cougar playing a different position. With Mark Passador coming back through the reserves at full forward, Glenn was forced up the field to half forward and struggled initially with his positioning. That got better as the day went on and he finished with 2 goals.
Jarrad Redden (for Eagles reserves v Central reserves @ Woodville) – Reddo’s first game back after more than a month out with an ankle injury. He rucked really well winning a majority of the ruck contests and followed up his work at stoppages. As you’d expect, he struggled with his fitness having been out for a while, but we were still happy with his game. 23 hitouts and a goal to finish the day.
Mitch Farmer (for Sturt reserves v Norwood reserves @ the Parade) – Mitch’s best game for the year by a fair way. He played in the midfield and across the half forward flank, collecting 14 kicks, 6 handballs and taking 12 marks, to go with a very impressive 4.1. We were really impressed with his work ethic and if he can perform like that for a couple of weeks in a row, he’ll be up playing league.
Jackson Trengove (for Port reserves v West reserves @ Alberton) – Jackson played CHB and a bit in the ruck and despite being caught out a couple of times defensively, was again impressive, playing a full game for the first time since his return. He had 16 possessions and 6 marks and was very aggressive in the ruck. We’re pleased with how he’s coming along.
Matthew Lobbe (for West reserves v Port reserves @ Alberton) – Matty decided recently to move to West Adelaide and his first game for the Bloods was against his former club, the Magpies. The Magpies have several experienced ruckmen in Maric, Meiklejohn and Batson, and Matt thought his future opportunities at the Maggies wouldn’t be as good as they will be at the Bloods. He had a good outing in his first game, rucking all day – something he hadn’t done at Port – and finishing with 18 possessions, 7 marks and 21 hitouts. He was impressive around the ground and hunted the ball well. We’re hoping he’ll be pushing for a league spot soon.
Matthew Martin (for West reserves v Port reserves @ Alberton) – Matty didn’t have a huge influence on the game, having a couple of goals kicked on him. He continues to work hard on his defensive positioning and we’re confident Matt will bounce back next week.
Wade Thompson (for North reserves v South reserves @ Noarlunga) – A better game from Wade with 17 possessions, 6 running bounces and 4 tackles – an area we’d been looking for improvement from him. Showed some lightning pace along the wing but unfortunately didn’t kick as straight as we’d have liked finishing with 1.2.
Josh Carr (for North reserves v South reserves @ Noarlunga) – Carry played for North’s reserves because the Bays had the bye and he had a very good game. He led from the front and imparted some of his knowledge and experience on their younger guys. Racked up plenty of the leather with 13 kicks, 22 handballs, 8 tackles and 6 clearances. He was busy at stoppages and linked up well through the midfield.
