PORT ADELAIDE’s latest visit to Whyalla was an ideal showcase of its collaboration with several partners including joint major partner GFG.
As part of a two-day trip to the Upper Spencer Gulf city, staff from the club’s not-for-profit arm Power Community Limited, visited 180 students to deliver educational sessions focussed on healthy lifestyles and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Power Community Limited General Manager, Jake Battifuoco said the trip provided a fantastic opportunity to connect with the Whyalla community, and he paid tribute to GFG for making it happen.
“We’ve got a great relationship with the Whyalla community through our strong partnership with GFG and it was really good to get back,” Mr Battifuoco said.
“There are 30 students across various schools in Whyalla who are enrolled in the GFG Foundation and through our partnership we had the pleasure of working with the students through our STEM education”
“Our visit enabled us to provide exposure to STEM-related careers available to students at the Port Adelaide Football Club while also facilitating interactive activities aimed at developing STEM skills.”
The GFG Foundation has a focus on programs that help young people reach their full potential, particularly developing skills that can strengthen the industries in their local communities.
Port Adelaide also leant on its relationship with the Australian Defence Force to enhance the sessions.
“We have a partnership with the ADF Aussie Rules and it was great that they came out alongside us and talked about career pathways in the ADF as well as showcasing some military vehicles which was a unique experience for the students” Mr Battifuoco explained.
Power Community Limited staff also took the opportunity to visit the Long Street and Memorial Oval Primary Schools to deliver its Community Youth Program and share messages around healthy lifestyles, respectful relationships and STEM to 150 children.
Mr Battifuoco thanked another club partner in Variety - the Children’s Charity - for enabling an expansion of that program in 2021.
“Variety’s latest partnership has allowed us to see an additional 500 primary school kids and as a result we were able to deliver our Community Youth Program to those schools in Whyalla,” Mr Battifuoco said.
Obviously, the regional schools don’t get as much exposure to our programs as those around Adelaide so Variety’s support has allowed us to break down those barriers and connect with students who might not otherwise get to take part.”
