Meyer was involved in everything, turning defence into attack with some precision kicking off the half back line, taking a Mark of the Year contender just for good measure. Development coaches Garry Hocking and Darren Trevena were impressed with the rookie-listed defender’s hard running and defensive pressure.
The award is judged by the Power development coaches and is announced exclusively at PortAdelaideFC.com.au each week.
Other top performers were Matt Lobbe who led West’s ruck division to set up a surprise win over North and Daniel Webb who booted seven for Bloods’ reserves. The full wrap is below.
SANFL Player of the Week
Danny Meyer (for Glenelg v Norwood @ the Bay) - The standout for round one playing on a half back flank for Glenelg. Danny finished with 29 possession, 9 marks, 9 tackles and 10 handball receives. He used the ball very well and set up a lot of play from the backline. It was a good balance between hard ball gets and handball receives, which show he’s running hard. Also applied great defensive pressure and took a mark of the year contender.
Tom Logan (for Glenelg v Norwood @ the Bay) - Tommy was hard at it right from the start, crashing into packs and doing everything he could to win possession for the Bays. Spent time in the midfield but was fantastic after half time when he moved forward, booting three goals in the second half. A very good game by the numbers too, 13 kicks, 9 handballs, 8 marks and 6 tackles.
Josh Carr (for Glenelg v Norwood @ the Bay) - Solid game from Josh. After a slow start he worked his way into the game nicely after quarter time and won some good contested footy. Rotated through the midfield and up forward and used the ball well, as we’d expect from him. Finished the game with 10 kicks, 10 handballs, 7 marks and 4 tackles.
Jay Nash (for Central v Port @ Elizabeth) - Nashy played on a half back flank and used the ball very well. Had 22 possessions, 3 marks and 2 tackles and continues to set up play for the Doggies. After an impressive month of footy he’ll keep putting pressure on the Power side for selection.
Matt Westhoff (for Central v Port @ Elizabeth) - Matty looked good and presented well early until he picked up an injury in a marking contest when he landed heavily and didn’t take any further part in the game. His forward pressure again looked great and he’ll be hoping to be right for this weekend.
Cameron Cloke (for Port v Central @ Elizabeth) - Played in the ruck and at full forward, where he was very effective booting 3.1. Finished the game with 7 kicks, 4 handballs, 6 marks and 9 hitouts. He out positioned the opposition well and had a good battle in the ruck with Buckets MacKenzie..
Matt Lobbe (for West v North @ Richmond) - Rucked well against a good trio in O’Hara, Stewart and Gill, giving his midfielders first use of the ball with 22 hitouts. Showed a good ability to run both ways to create a marking option and fill a hole in defence. Finished with 7 kicks, 4 handballs, 3 marks, 4 tackles and 1 goal.
Michael Pettigrew (for West v North @ Richmond) - Petters best game for 2010. Played at centre half forward and was pro-active, attacking the ball and presenting well. He created opportunities booting 1.1 and looked good down back in the last quarter.
Marlon Motlop (for North v West @ Richmond) - Playing at half back he was under the pump the whole game with West dominating. Got a few good touches in the second quarter before fracturing his foot in the third quarter.
Daniel Stewart (for North v West @ Richmond) - Played up forward for North and was starved of opportunities. Moved into the ruck and performed well enough. Not as much impact as he would have liked but he still chased and tackled well.
Daniel Webb (for West reserves v North reserves @ Richmond) - Webby was great and really looked a class above at the reserves level on the weekend. Playing up forward he took some strong contested marks and presented well. He booted a massive 7.4 including goals from set shots, on the run and snaps. Finished with 13 possessions and 7 marks. He also looked good in the ruck and will be pushing for senior selection this week.
Daniel Bass (for South reserves v Sturt reserves @ Noarlunga) - Played a lot in the ruck and it was a much improved game, dominating the hitouts. He gave South first use of the ball and also worked hard around the ground to get a few handball receives. He’s really made big progress over the past few months in terms of his understanding of the game and is starting to look a lot more comfortable out there.
Jordan Johns (for South reserves v Sturt reserves @ Noarlunga) - Played half back and on the wing. Not his best day at the office but he did look good in the final quarter playing in a back pocket. Finished with 7 possessions and he’ll be looking to improve on that this week.
Jasper Pittard picked up a slight injury at training during the week and did not play for Sturt. He is expected to be available to play this weekend.
