ACCOMPLISHED and respected leader Erin Phillips will captain Port Adelaide for its second season in the NAB AFLW competition.

The three-time All-Australian will wear the number one guernsey for another year, and will be ably supported by co-vice-captains Ange Foley and Janelle Cuthbertson.

Foley was the sole vice-captain in 2022, while new club recruit Cuthbertson will join her as an extra level of support.

Rounding out the leadership group are livewire Justine Mules and experienced head Hannah Dunn.

“I feel very grateful to be named captain for another season,” Phillips said.

“There is incredible privilege and responsibility that comes with wearing the number one at this club, and I will always aim to do it proud.

“I’m really happy to be supported by a strong and capable group of leaders in Ange, Janelle, Justine and Hannah and I also want to congratulate our group of emerging leaders.

“Everyone is working really hard toward achieving more on-field success in 2023 and we can’t wait to get our season started.”

This year for the first time, an emerging leader group has also been chosen, with the players selected demonstrating promising leadership qualities.

Maria Moloney, Alex Ballard, Sachi Syme and Julia Teakle are the four emerging leaders voted in by their peers, with the group set to take on extra responsibility throughout the season.

Port Adelaide head of AFLW Juliet Haslam congratulated all nine players on their respective appointments.

“To have Erin lead our group again this season is very special,” Haslam said.

“She has a proven record of fantastic leadership, both on and off the field and a deep connection to this club. I know that Erin and her leadership group will guide the team with enthusiasm and continue building on the connection we established in our inaugural year.

“We are also pleased to have appointed a group of emerging leaders. The four players that have been selected have shown great commitment and professionalism and are positive role models for our young group.”

Port Adelaide will begin its second AFLW campaign on Saturday, 2 September in a Showdown at Norwood Oval.
