In the second of three line review segments, midfield manager Phil Walsh and development coach Aaron Greaves review the performances of Port Adelaide’s midfield at the halfway point of the season...

1. Travis Boak
Games Power: 11, Magpies: 0

AFL averages: 29.9 disposals (42.91% contested), 72% disp efficiency, 3.5 marks, 5.2 clearances, 3.8 tackles, 0.6 goals
Fantastic leadership, has taken his game to another level. His ability to coordinate what’s going on out on the ground and bring other players into the game is significant. He’s had a hard tag on him at times but despite that he’s had some outstanding games. The thing we’ve got going at the moment is that we’re not a personnel-based team, nor a personnel-based midfield, so that's allowed Travis to spend some time at the centre bounce he has also gone forward at times. We’re really looking forward to him finishing the year at the same level he’s started it at. – Phil Walsh

4. Brent Renouf INJ
Games Power: 1, Magpies: 5

AFL averages: 3 disposals (0% contested), 66.7% disp efficiency, 1 marks, 0 clearances, 1 tackles, 0 goals
Renouf started the year really well, but obviously struggled to find consistency in his game through injury setbacks. He was really dominating in the SANFL and got his chance against Fremantle, but then suffered a knee injury against North Adelaide and underwent surgery, so unfortunately we won’t see much of him for the rest of the year. – Aaron Greaves

7. Brad Ebert
Games Power: 12, Magpies: 0
AFL averages: 23.9 disposals (37.63% contested), 69.7% disp efficiency, 5.8 marks, 4 clearances, 6.5 tackles, 0.7 goals

Like Travis, his leadership has been really good for us. He’s done some big jobs for us – Fyfe against Fremantle, Dangerfield against Adelaide – and he’s been able to find the footy himself. His work rate and second efforts around the ball are second to none and he sets a good example for our side. He’s prepared to do the team thing and is versatile in the roles he’s willing to play for us. – Phil Walsh

8. Hamish Hartlett INJ
Games Power: 10, Magpies: 0
AFL averages: 21.2 disposals (38.21% contested), 72.6% disp efficiency, 5.1 marks, 2.2 clearances, 3.3 tackles, 1.1 goals

Unfortunately Hamish missed one game with the report and then came back against St Kilda and played, probably, his best game for us. He’ll miss against Western Bulldogs with an injury, which is again unfortunate. Hamish missed much of the pre-season, but we’re hoping he can do a lot more work inside the stoppage during this second half of the year and hopefully produce a strong performance inside the centre square for the second half of the year. Hamish has had the tag this year, but the form of Boak, Ebert, Gray, even Polec, has meant he hasn’t often been sat on. It’s something he is still working his way through, and adapting to, but he has made progress there as well. – Phil Walsh

9. Robbie Gray
Games Power: 12, Magpies: 0
AFL averages: 24.2 disposals (43.1% contested), 71% disp efficiency, 4.6 marks, 4.8 clearances, 5.4 tackles, 0.7 goals

Robbie splits his time for us between up forward and on-ball. He’s had an outstanding start to the year going on his efforts and his standing in the AFLCA award votes. Robbie is a fantastic centre square player; one touch, clean; but at the same time he kicks goals, so it’s a bit of a fight between Tyson Edwards and myself as to whether he plays midfield or forward. We see it being about 50/50 for the rest of the year. – Phil Walsh

16. Ollie Wines
Games Power: 12, Magpies: 0
AFL averages: 25.2 disposals (49.01% contested), 63.6% disp efficiency, 3.2 marks, 4.9 clearances, 5.4 tackles, 0.7 goals

He’s been enormous for us around the stoppages, has improved his spread and hits the scoreboard. He’s played on-ball for the majority of the year but has also played up forward at times. You’ve got to remind yourself that this kid is only 19 years old. He’s got a lot to learn still but he looks like he could be a really exciting player for us going forward. – Phil Walsh

18. Kane Cornes
Games Power: 12, Magpies: 0
AFL averages: 27.3 disposals (24.09% contested), 72.6% disp efficiency, 5.7 marks, 2 clearances, 4 tackles, 0 goals

Kane’s done some really big jobs for us this year and we’ve been really happy with him. Not only that but he’s found a lot of the footy at times playing on the wing and on-ball. Most weeks he’ll do a job for us, and he hasn’t let us down yet this year. Kane’s great strength is the consistency of his performance and the leadership he provides to younger players. – Phil Walsh

19. Matt White
Games Power: 11, Magpies: 0
AFL averages: 15.9 disposals (32.57% contested), 74.3% disp efficiency, 4.5 marks, 1 clearances, 3.4 tackles, 1.5 goals

Matt’s played on-ball, but mainly wing and half-forward. He hits the scoreboard, is a fantastic running player and can win his own football. He’s a player who I think we’ll see more of in the centre square over the next couple of years. – Phil Walsh

21. Jared Polec
Games Power: 11, Magpies: 0
AFL averages: 21.9 disposals (33.20% contested), 74.3% disp efficiency, 3.9 marks, 2.5 clearances, 2.6 tackles, 0.7 goals

Polly has had an outstanding season for us so far this year and has gone through the centre square and played mainly on the wing for us. We always knew Jared was a great outside player, but we’ve been particularly pleased with his inside work as well. He can win his own football, and we’re really excited about his second half of the year. Importantly we think there’s more improvement in him, after another pre-season with us. – Phil Walsh

23. Matthew Lobbe
Games Power: 11, Magpies: 0
AFL averages: 11.9 disposals (54.96% contested), 73.3% disp efficiency, 2.5 marks, 3.1 clearances, 5.8 tackles, 0.5 goals

'Lobbes' has been outstanding and is shouldering a bit of a load for us, but has developed in a number of areas. The technical side of his ruck work and his ability to convert his strength means he’s becoming hard to play against. We measure his consistency at the contest and that has been strong this year, which is really good for us. – Aaron Greaves

26. Andrew Moore INJ
Games Power: 1, Magpies: 6
AFL averages: 8 disposals (50% contested), 75% disp efficiency, 2 marks, 2 clearances, 2 tackles, 0 goals

Moorey has been outstanding at SANFL level, but has been unlucky with a few injuries. He’s been consistently played well for the Maggies, and has been a very strong contributor for us at that level. He got his opportunity against Melbourne but unfortunately injured himself again after being the sub. We’ll see some good footy from him in the second half of the year. – Aaron Greaves

34. Jarrad Redden INJ
Games Power: 0, Magpies: 0
Reddo is getting his body to a level where it an stand up to the rigours of AFL footy. He’s changed his shape and looks strong, his work ethic has really improved, and he’s making some significant gains that will keep him in good stead next year and beyond. – Aaron Greaves

37. Kane Mitchell
Games Power: 5, Magpies: 5
AFL averages: 18 disposals (40% contested), 66.7% disp efficiency, 4.8 marks, 1.4 clearances, 6.4 tackles, 0.8 goals

Kane missed the first few games, then got upgraded and has been a regular in the team for the last few weeks. He’s an outstanding runner and the thing we’ve really liked this year is the ability he’s shown to win his own football. He’s really suited to the Adelaide Oval and he looks to be a really solid player for us. – Phil Walsh

38. Ben Newton
Games Power: 2, Magpies: 6
AFL averages: 13.5 disposals (33.33% contested), 66.7% disp efficiency, 3 marks, 0.5 clearances, 1.5 tackles, 0 goals

Newts has been Mr Consistent with the Magpies. No one works harder than Newts, and he’s been really consistent at stoppage with his first possession and clearance work. I’m really confident that if he keeps his high standards of training that he’ll give himself the best possible opportunity to play AFL footy. He knows he’s up against some great midfielders at the club and just keep knocking down the door. – Aaron Greaves

40. Aaron Young
Games Power: 9, Magpies: 1
AFL averages: 11.3 disposals (46.08% contested), 76.5% disp efficiency, 2.8 marks, 2.4 clearances, 1.7 tackles, 0.4 goals

Youngy has been used as a substitute a lot. Unfortunately he had an interrupted pre-season, but we’re really happy with what he brings to the group. His ability to mark the ball has a different look to our other mids, but we’re hopeful that, like many other players mentioned, his second half of the year will be better again. We see him as being an important part of our midfield going forward. – Phil Walsh
