Port Adelaide ruck Jordon Sweet says he grateful and privileged to sign a fresh four-year extension at Alberton, which will take him to 2030.
The 206-centimetre big man has taken his game to another level this season, being driven by his lack of AFL selection in Round 1.
Sweet spoke with portadelaidefc.com.au on Friday about his love for the football club, working with the club’s young rucks and how much he’s looking forward to becoming a dad.
Sweet on his contract extension
“It's huge. I mean, it's probably the biggest time of my life in football. That is my biggest contract so far, which is huge. I had three one-year contracts to start my career at Western Bulldogs, and then to get a two-year deal with them and now, a three and a four-year deal, I'm very proud of what I've been able to do to get to this position I'm in now. My family is really proud, and I think my wife is really happy, it's good. I can't wait to spend the next four years at Port Adelaide.”
Sweet on being a childhood Port supporter
“Growing up with my brothers, they were all Port nuffies, and I remember them giving me some old Port jerseys when I was a kid, and a Wharfie top. It was an old Port Magpies top, my brother gave me that. I've just supported Port since being a kid, and to now (play here for), what will be seven years after this deal ends. I'm really privileged, and I'm grateful for the opportunity.”
Sweet on missing out on Round 1 selection
“It was tough. It was a very dark time for me. At the start of the year, it was a kick up the ass for sure. I don't think my pre-season was that bad, but Dante was doing really well at the time, and I had to work extra hard to get my spot back. I've adjusted well as well to the new ruck rules. So I feel like I've done that pretty well throughout the year. And Lobbe (ruck coach Matt Lobbe) and I were talking through some stats yesterday about what's happened this year and where I rank and all that sort of stuff, and they’re all relatively high. So I'm pretty happy with how I've gone this year.”
Sweet on working with Dante Visentini
“Yeah, it's been really good. Dante's grown so much, and so much so, he's now found himself a spot in defence. We may have lost him for a bit, but hopefully he comes back into the ruck soon. But he's been really good. I've learned so much off Dante as well. He's very physical and a competitive beast. And now Wykky (Alex van Wyk) coming in halfway, he's pushed me even further. He's really long and he's really good aerial mark. So training on him has been really good.”
Sweet on growing his leadership
“For sure. I've really enjoyed working with Wykky already so far while he's been here. We miss Do (retired ruck Ivan Soldo). He was a really competitive player and brought a different trait that some of us don't have. It's been really good working with those two rucks already, and even working with Matilda (Scholz) as well. I feel like I can help her a bit with her game, and so Dante can do the same as well. So we're all learning from each other, which is really good.”
Sweet on working with AFLW ruck Matilda Scholz
“(Head of AFLW) Daniel Merrett and Lobbes got in contact with (Dante and me) and assisted us along the way of doing it all. It's been really fun. She's really eager to learn and she just has fun playing footy, which is really good, and we get a big buzz out of it. And then we spoke about her last week's game against Freo and how she was really scared about going against an All-Australian ruck, and we said, "Well, you're All-Australian as well!”, and she can match it with them. She was rapt with how she went.”
Sweet on becoming a dad soon
“It's crazy. Right now, we’re only seven weeks away at the most, so it could happen anytime soon with twins. So, it's scary, but it's also a very exciting time jumping straight in the deep end with twins. We're very excited as a family.”
