PORT ADELAIDE forward Zak Butters is excited to tie himself to the football club, after signing a two-year contract extension on Tuesday morning.

Butters says he is looking forward to developing his football craft at Alberton, with his extension locking him in until at least the end of season 2022.

“It’s good to sign on,” Butters told portadelaidefc.com.au.

“Keep myself in Adelaide and at the club for a few more years. Hopefully learn a lot about the club and footy, and develop my game over the next few years.

“It is a great opportunity.”

The 18-year-old has looked up to a number of senior players since his arrival at the Power, but four-time All-Australian Robbie Gray, and former skipper Travis Boak have had the biggest impact on the crafty forward.

“Robbie (Gray) would be one for me,” Butters said.

“He’s a small forward/midfielder, and if I keep chipping away, hopefully I can get somewhere near his level in the future.

“Guys like Travis Boak, just show what football is, and his professionalism and work rate, just everything he does is to an elite level.

“Having those blokes at the club, just to learn from them, look at them and see what they do, inspires you to get to their level.”

Butters re-signed alongside fellow 2018 first-round draftees Connor Rozee and Xavier Duursma, as well as defender Joel Garner and forward Jake Patmore, and he says their role is to bring the energy and spark around the playing group.

“(We) bring that energy and spark I think as young kids,” he said.

“We try to always be up and about around the club, and just bringing that spark to the playing group as well, and just buzzing around out on the field.”

While the Power have been inconsistent so far in 2019, the Western Jets product says the belief within the group is strong and the feeling at Alberton is positive.

“The feeling is pretty good,” Butters said.

“Inside the four walls, we have a lot of belief in the playing group in the performances we can put out on the park.

“It’s been really good to be a part of the change, and hopefully be a part of the future going forward.”

Port will be looking to make it two wins on the trot for the first time since Round 6, when it hosts the fourth-placed Brisbane Lions at Adelaide Oval on Sunday afternoon in a blockbuster clash.
