FOR the second year in a row, Port Adelaide will take a very strong draft hand into the NAB AFL National Draft.

Port will take picks 12, 16 and 18 into the first round of this year’s draft - however picks can still be traded live on the night - to add to the three first-round selections the club made last season.

Teams have had some success with these selections throughout the years, with a number of players at 12, 16 and 18 going on to have extremely fruitful careers.

Here is a history of pick 12:

Pick 12

Shaun Burgoyne

In 2000, the Power chose Shaun Burgoyne from the Port Adelaide Magpies at pick 12 with its first selection in the national draft.

Burgoyne debuted for the club in 2002, managing 157 games and 171 goals, an All-Australian selection in 2006, and one premiership throughout his time at Alberton.

The silky right-footer then made the move to Hawthorn in 2010, where he has added a further 219 games and 119 goals and another three premierships.

In 2019, Burgoyne eclipsed Adam Goodes’ record (372 games) for most games played by an Indigenous player.

Burgoyne's career tally currently sits at 376 games, and he has signed a one-year contract extension to continue he career into a 19th season.

Jay Schulz

Jay Schulz was picked up by Richmond with pick 12, and kicked 58 goals from his 71 games with the Tigers.

Schulz made the move to Alberton in 2010 where he added another 123 games and 275 goals for the Power.

The key forward led Port Adelaide’s goalkicking on four occasions - 2010, 2012, 2013 & 2014 - with a career-high tally of eight goals against the Western Bulldogs at Adelaide Oval in 2014.

He finished his AFL career with 333 goals from 194 games.

Cyril Rioli

Cyrli Rioli was Hawthorn’s first pick in 2007 when they selected the Darwin teenager with pick 12.

Rioli went on to become one of the AFLs most exciting prospects in his 10 years involved in the game.

The 30-year-old played 189 games for the Hawks and booted 275 goals. He was awarded the Norm Smith Medal in 2015, and was involved in four premiership wins for the brown and gold.

Rioli won the 2009 Goal of the Year, and made the All-Australian teams in 2012, 2015 and 2016.

Zak Butters

One of the Power’s three first-round draftees in 2018, Butters quickly established himself as a fan favourite thanks to his skilful play and enthusiastic demeanour.

Diminutive in stature, but sizable in courage, the Western Jets product averaged 14.1 touches and added 12 goals through his 19 games.
