The young, developing ruckman showed his great aerobic capacity, rucking all day for his new club West against quality opposition for Norwood. Lobbe, who was taken at pick 16 in the 2007 National Draft, held off strong opposition from Nick Salter (six goals), Jackson Trengove (sixth best) and Mitch Banner (23 possessions, 7 tackles) to win the award.
The award is judged by Power development coaches, Darren Trevena and Stuart Cochrane, and is announced exclusively at PortAdelaideFC.com.au each week.
It was a busy week for the development coaches, with 16 Power players in action across the weekend. The full wrap is below.
Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week
Matthew Lobbe (for West v Norwood @ the Parade) – We really rated Matty’s game this week. He had an excellent work rate – rucking all day – and showing some great signs around the ground. He jumped in well against Doyle – an AFL experienced ruckman – and Dawe winning 24 hitouts, using his body well. His development since he’s been at West has been fantastic and we’re really happy he’s been able to hold down a first string ruck spot. He finished the game with 10 kicks, 3 marks and 5 handballs. We’re certainly hoping for more of the same in future weeks.
Mitch Banner (for Eagles v Glenelg @ Woodville) – Mitch got plenty of the ball playing the in the midfield and was particularly impressive in the centre square. He had a good impact with good defensive pressure and four clearances. He had 20 kicks, 6 marks, 3 handballs, completed 7 tackles and also got a few handball receives – a sign his confidence is building.
Paul Stewart (for Eagles v Glenelg @ Woodville) – Plenty of the ball again for Stewie, picking up 26 possessions and taking 13 marks – including some good intercept marks. He’s rebounding from defence well but just needs to perfect the balance between zoning off and attacking from the backline.
Nick Salter (for Eagles v Glenelg @ Woodville) – Kicked 6.1 from just 8 kicks in an impressive performance. He certainly made the most of his opportunities, being given the forward 50 to work in. Salts also applied some good defensive pressure, something we’ve been working with him on. His straight kicking was very impressive in windy conditions.
Steven Salopek (for Glenelg v Eagles @ Woodville) – Sal’s first game back at the Bays for a long time. It was a solid game, amassing 22 possessions, kicking a goal and laying 5 tackles. He positioned himself well in the backline and used the ball well, especially in congestion. We’ll be hoping he can build on that game this week.
Jackson Trengove (for Port v North @ Alberton) – Jacko was again good, playing predominantly on Alleway but also spending time on White and Schwarze. He kept Alleway quiet and spoiled very well. He continues to impress us with his competitiveness when the ball is in his area – he shows some real aggression. He’s also helped the Magpies by releasing AhChee to play forward.
Marlon Motlop (for North v Port @ Alberton) – Marlon played half back and a bit on the ball. He didn’t have as many damaging possessions as he had been having earlier in the season. He still looked to create with 10 handball receives and used the ball reasonably well with 16 possessions.
Jonathon Giles (for Central v South @ Noarlunga) – Good game from Joff despite once again having limited time on ground. He rucked very well, putting 25 hitouts to advantage and certainly had an influence when he was on the ground around the stoppages.
Matthew Westhoff (for Central v South @ Noarlunga) – A good game from a very smart footy player. His movement, in terms of where he leads, is of AFL standard and he made the most of his chances, kicking 4 goals straight (Central only kicked 11 for the day). His first quarter especially was very good playing CHF and FF, kicking very straight in tough, windy conditions.
Mitch Farmer (for South v Central @ Noarlunga) – Mitch played his first league game for his new club, playing half forward and on the ball. His pressure all over the ground was good, chasing hard and applying 8 tackles. He’s still learning the structures of his new team but he regularly got to the right spots. He wasn’t always used but it was good to see he kept presenting. Finished with 1.1 and he’ll be looking to have a real impact for South for the remainder of the season.
Glenn Dawson (for Eagles reserves v Glenelg reserves @ Woodville) – It was the first time this year Glenn hasn’t kicked a goal, which shows how consistent he’s been. Finished with 7 possessions and 4 marks in a quiet day. We’re confident he’ll bounce back this week with a few goals.
Jarrad Redden (for Eagles reserves v Glenelg reserves @ Woodville) – A slightly quieter day for Jarrad, but his tap ruck work was still very good with 22 hitouts to advantage. He followed up well at stoppage, applying good pressure with 5 tackles. He keeps working on his positioning and just needs to take a few more marks when playing in the ruck.
Daniel Stewart (for North reserves v Port reserves @ Alberton) – Started off at full forward kicking into a strong breeze and despite limited opportunities he finished with two goals. He also spent some time at centre half back and did well. It’s a position we haven’t seen him play before so it was a nice bonus to know he can play there. He competed well in the ruck and got to plenty of marking contests, but just needs to take a few more grabs.
Wade Thompson (for North reserves v Port reserves @ Alberton) – Wado did a few good things – kicking a couple of goals – and getting a bit of the ball with 14 possessions. Wade needs to improve his consistency and use his speed to better effect.
Jesse Laurie (for West reserves v Norwood reserves @ the Parade) – A very good game from Jesse, racking up plenty of the ball with 24 kicks, 6 handballs and 16 marks. He used the ball well and won a fair bit of it himself with some good hard ball gets. He also showed he can play a good defensive game, playing a negating role very well for one quarter. Should push for league selection this week.
Matthew Martin (for Eagles reserves v Norwood reserves @ the Parade) – Matty pulled his hamstring in the second quarter and didn’t take any further part in the game. He’ll be out for a few weeks unfortunately.
