AFTER 17 goals in four weeks – including 5.1 on Saturday – Nick Salter has been rewarded with the Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week award.

Coming off bags of three, six and three, Salter again made the most of his opportunities in a losing side at Unley. In wet and windy conditions, his accuracy in front of goal was a feature.

The award is judged by Power development coaches, Darren Trevena and Stuart Cochrane, and is announced exclusively at PortAdelaideFC.com.au each week.

In other games, Nick Lower was again dominant for the Redlegs, racking up 35 possessions, Matt Thomas made a comeback in the reserves and Daniel Stewart booted five majors for the Roosters’ reserves. The full wrap is below.

Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week
Nick Salter (for Eagles v Sturt @ Unley)Salts was in the goals again this week, booting 5 for a losing side. He didn’t have a huge amount of the ball (13 possessions and 4 marks), but he took his opportunities very well, kicking straight with 5.1. He again applied good forward line pressure and his consistency is really pleasing.

Mitch Banner (for Eagles v Sturt @ Unley)Mitch worked into the game after the first quarter, picking up 22 possessions and kicking 1.3. He was uncharacteristically inaccurate in front of goals, but used the ball effectively and creatively through the midfield. It was also pleasing to see him work hard to get a few handball receives.

Matthew Broadbent (for Eagles v Sturt @ Unley)Broady was again good for the Eagles, having a real impact at the stoppages. He finished with 22 possessions, 10 marks, a goal and a massive 10 tackles. He was able to be creative in the midfield and set up a lot of play going forward for the Eagles.

Jarrad Redden (for Eagles v Sturt @ Unley)Big Red competed well in the ruck and followed up at ground level at the stoppages. Didn’t get a huge amount of the ball with 8 possessions, but did have 5 tackles. He’s developing nicely as the year progresses.

Nick Lower (for Norwood v North @ Prospect)Nick was again prolific for the Redlegs, picking up 35 possessions playing on a wing. He also rotated on the ball and worked hard all day. He used the ball well and he continues to impress at SANFL level.

Matthew Westhoff (for Central v West @ Richmond)Westy was a bit quieter this week, drifting in and out of the game. Had a good second quarter booting 2.1 but he just needs to work on keeping in the game and being more of a focal point in the Bulldogs forward line.

Johnathon Giles (for Central v West @ Richmond)Joffa tried to run Matty Lobbe around, given he was a bit fresher sharing the ruck with Mackenzie, and had some success doing it. He was good in the ruck with 22 hitouts and tackled well, but he just needs to get a bit more of the ball around the ground.

Matthew Lobbe (for West v Central @ Richmond)Matty rucked all day against ‘Buckets’ Mackenzie and Gilesy. He tried to run Mackenzie around a bit and tried some different things in the ruck against a bigger body. A solid game, probably breaking even with Giles in the ruck. 24 hitouts, 5 kicks, 6 handballs, 2 marks and 7 tackles.

Jesse Laurie (for West v Central @ Richmond)Limited time on ground for Jesse, only playing about 30 minutes. Did as well as he could given his limited opportunities, finishing with 5 kicks, 2 marks, 3 handballs and 0.1.

Mitch Farmer (for South v Port @ Alberton)A good game for Mitch after a slow start. He had 21 possessions, 5 tackles and a goal playing half back and a bit in the middle. He had some good in and under clearance work and looked very controlled down back for the Panthers.

Jackson Trengove (for Port v South @ Alberton)Jackson had another good game for the Magpies, keeping his man goalless for the entire game. He had some good spoils and generally gave nothing to his opponent. Finished with 10 possessions and 3 tackles. We’re pleased with how he’s progressing.

Glenn Dawson (for Eagles reserves v Sturt reserves @ Unley)A rarity for the Cougar, being kept goalless in the Eagles reserves. He started in the goal square and with a howling wind at Unley, struggled to get in the game. To his credit, he moved into the backline and kept his man quiet. He probably just needs to work on running off his man a bit more. He also managed to give a couple of goal assists in the final quarter.

Matt Thomas (for Norwood reserves v North reserves @ Prospect)Matty came back through the reserves, getting through the game unscathed. He played his typical tough, in and under self, and he also used the ball well. We were happy with his hitout.

Daniel Stewart (for North reserves v Norwood reserves @ Prospect)A good performance from Stewie, booting 5.4 as the dominant forward on the day – his second five goal haul. He had a great first and last quarter (booting 3.3 in the last), presenting and marking well all day. He’ll be pushing for league selection again this week.

Wade Thompson (for North reserves v Norwood reserves @ Prospect)Wade had a solid game, booting two goals and giving some good chases from the forward line. He still needs to work on his running game, to use his pace a bit smarter.

Jordan Johns (for South reserves v Port reserves @ Alberton)Jordan Johns is one of the club’s NSW Scholarship holders and we’ll have priority to select him should we choose to at this year’s draft. He’s come over during the school holidays to play for South Adelaide after a relatively successful U/18 Championships for NSW/ACT. He had 16 possessions playing across half forward and adjusted to the SANFL style quickly. He showed some good speed, applied good forward line pressure and had a good work rate. A solid first up game overall for Jordan.
