FIRST round draft pick Chad Wingard is just one fitness test away from returning to Port Adelaide's AFL side this weekend.

Wingard injured his shoulder against Adelaide in Round 5 and has progressed well enough to undergo a fitness test later this week.

“I won’t find out til Wednesday or Thursday but I’m confident with my shoulder, I’m confident with all parts of my body, I think I’ve got the best medical staff here (at Alberton) and they’ll tell me if I’m ready,” said Wingard.

“We do a lot of work in rehab … game simulation, some running, some kicking as well.

So I haven’t lost too much game sense…but you cant compare training to actual game fitness.

“It’s hard to tell, but I’ve got the medical staff here to tell me what I can and can’t do.”

Wingard told the media today that his favourite player growing up was North Melbourne’s Daniel Wells and an all-clear on his shoulder could see him named on Thursday in the squad to face the Kangaroos.

If selected, Wingard will play his sixth AFL match.
