Port Adelaide and Hawthorn will again lock horns for Sir Doug Nicholls Round when they meet at Adelaide Oval on Saturday 22 August.

Port Adelaide is honoured to be hosting Hawthorn in Round 13 at Adelaide Oval as part of the AFL’s Sir Doug Nicholls Round.

The twilight game on Saturday 22 August marks the first time the club has hosted the AFL’s Indigenous Round since 2013.

Port Adelaide chief executive Keith Thomas says it’s a privilege to host such a significant fixture at Adelaide Oval.

“This is a very special opportunity for our industry and as a club we will cherish this opportunity to celebrate what Indigenous players have brought to our great game,” Mr Thomas said.

“Brilliant Indigenous footballers have enjoyed a wonderful history at Port Adelaide, dating back decades before we entered the AFL competition in 1997.

“And we have continued our deep connection with Aboriginal communities not only through our modern day AFL greats, but also through our industry-leading Aboriginal community programs led by Paul Vandenbergh.

“Our flagship Aboriginal community program is the Aboriginal Power Cup which has engaged thousands of Aboriginal secondary school students since its inception in 2008. We are delighted that Santos will continue as the major partner of the Aboriginal Power Cup and their outstanding support will be recognised on the back of our Indigenous guernsey.

“We look forward to continuing to shine a light on the outstanding contributions Indigenous people have made to our game and to host Hawthorn, who too have such a proud history in this space, will add to what will be a very special day.

“Sir Doug Nicholls was the first Indigenous Australian to be appointed to a vice-regal office when appointed Governor of South Australia in 1976 so to host a game at Adelaide Oval in his honour is also very special.”

Port Adelaide will wear a First Nations indigenous guernsey designed by Kaurna elder Karl Telfer.

The design is called “Bukko Tjidna – Bare Foot” in honour of all of those who came before us and to respectfully walk softly alongside the footprints of our ancestors.

More information regarding the club’s Sir Doug Nicholls Round guernsey will be available in the lead up to the game.

Similarly, the member ticket allocation process will be communicated directly to members once the club has more information regarding capacity at Adelaide Oval.
